Another indication of rapid erosion for the Grand Staircase and the Grand Canyon area (the southwest Colorado Plateau) is the existence of Navajo Mountain, which stands 10,388 feet (3,048 m) above msl, near the Utah/Arizona border, about 82 miles (131 km) northeast of Grand Canyon. It is a volcanic mass that formed within sedimentary rocks, but now stands about 6,000 feet (1,829 m) above the surrounding sedimentary rocks, which have eroded away. This erosion must have been rapid, or else Navajo Mountain would not be left standing nearly as tall, since mountains erode much faster than does a rolling plateau.

East to Northeast Flowing Water Eroded the Grand Staircase

During the massive erosion that formed the Grand Staircase, the water currents were flowing toward the east to northeast. How do we know this? This deduction comes from a study of what is called the Rim Gravel.7

1) The clues within the amazing rim gravel

The Rim Gravel is found mostly on the southern edge of the southwestern Colorado Plateau.8 This edge of the plateau is called the Mogollon Rim, another east-west erosional cliff or slope (see Figure 2.10). Rim Gravel caps the very crest of the Mogollon Rim at elevations of 6,900 to 7,900 feet (2,100 to 2,400 m).9 It represents the rocks left over after the erosion of the southwestern Colorado Plateau, or the Great Denudation. Figure 6.10 shows the plotted outcrops of Rim Gravel.
